Zugzwang is inspired by a German phrase of the same name which when translated to English means "compulsion to move". The phrase also doubles as a chess term in which an opponent is put at a permanent disadvantage, because of their obligation to move, often characterising the unavoidable loss of the game but necessary continuation of play. The work is based upon these themes and through movement explores the inevitable, concluding play and expressive element of opposition.

The production also hosts a post show inclusive workshop (set on the performance flooring - a 4m x 4m chess board) led by the dancers which explores similar themes and choreographic tasks to that of our creation period. The workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities.
The production is available for touring and performance bookings throughout 2024/25. If you would like to view our production tour pack please get in contact.
